Iowa ranks No. 8 in repeat OWI cases

A recent news report took a look at the driving infractions in various states, specifically looking for issues with repeat offenders involving offenses like speeding, operating while intoxicated (OWI) and more. They then ranked the states based on how often these happened.

When looking at the overall statistics, Iowa came in at No. 2 on the list. The only state with more repeat offenses was North Dakota. Right behind Iowa, in the No. 3 spot, was Ohio.

However, the study did break things down a bit farther to look at the specifics. Here's how Iowa ranked for common offenses:

  • Repeated speeding violations: No. 1 overall
  • Repeated suspended licenses: No. 7 overall
  • Repeated DUI/OWI charges: No. 8 overall
  • Repeated accident cases: No. 12 overall

That's still quite a high ranking for something like driving under the influence. Despite stiff penalties, it is common for people to get arrested again, making the potential ramifications worse.

Wondering which state had the highest ranking for repeated drunk driving charges? Though it only ranked in at No. 9 overall, the No. 1 ranking in the DUI/OWI category went to Wyoming. The state also ranked in at No. 7 for speeding, No. 14 for license suspensions and No. 43 for car accidents.

Why do people get repeated OWI violations? There are a lot of potential reasons, including alcohol addiction -- an actual medical condition -- that may cause people to drink more than they should or make poor choices while under the influence.

One thing that is for certain is that all accused drivers deserve a fair trial. Those who get arrested on OWI charges in Iowa need to know all of their legal options.
